John Cotton was born on 4 December 1585 in Derby, Derbyshire, England.1,2 He was the son of Rowland Cotton and Mary Hurlbert.2 John Cotton married first Elizabeth Horrocks before 1612.2 John Cotton married second Sarah Hawkridge, daughter of Anthony Hawkridge and Isabel Dowse, before 3 October 1632.1,2 John Cotton died on 23 December 1652 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, at age 67.1,2 His estate was probated on 27 January 1652/53.2
He received a B.A. in 1598 at Trinity College, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.2 He received a M.A. between 1602 and 1603 at Trinity College, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.2 John's father Rowland Cotton died in 1604.3 John Cotton received a B.D. in 1606 at Emmanuel College, England.2 He was a Minister at Church of God, Boston, Lincolnshire, England, about 1613.2 He became a widower with the death of his wife, Elizabeth Horrocks after 2 October 1630.2 John Cotton emmigrated after 7 May 1633.2 He became the father of Seaborn Cotton on 12 August 1633.2,4 John Cotton immigrated about September 1633.2 He was chosen teacher of the congregation in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 10 October 1633.2 He was listed a freeman on 4 May 1634 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony.2 He became the father of Sarahjah Cotton on 12 September 1635.5 John Cotton became the father of Elizabeth Cotton on 9 December 1637.2 John Cotton became the father of Maria Cotton on 16 February 1641/42.2 John Cotton became the father of Rowland Cotton on 19 December 1643.2 John's daughter Sarahjah Cotton died on 20 January 1649/50 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.2 John's son Rowland Cotton died on 29 January 1649/50 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.2 John Cotton left a will on 30 November 1652.2
