, under Captain Richard Wollaston.1 Thomas Morton of Merrymount was one of the most entertaining characters in early New England history and was a constant thorn in the side of all Puritan authority. He erected a maypole at Wessagusset, to the displeasure of the settlers at Plymouth. In 1628 they put together a syndicate of investor who underwrite the expense of sending him back to England.1 Thomas Morton of Merrymount immigrated in 1628 to in England
