2,1 Signed Magna Carta in 1215 The statement in the legitimization of Joan, daughter of king John and wife of prince Llywelyn, that each of her parents were unmarried at the time of her birth, does not imply she was born prior to John's first marriage, to Isabelle de Clare in 1189. This marriage had been annulled by the time of Joan's legitimization, and would have been considered by the clerics not to have occurred. It might be that the legitimization does imply that, by the time of John's second marriage, to Isabelle of Angouleme, that Joan's mother was either dead or had become a nun, otherwise the legitimacy of king Henry III might have been called into question. It might also be that the reference in Joan's obituary to her mother as 'queen Clementia' implies that Clemence, mother of Joan, did not die or become a nun until after John's accession. I suspect that in the minds of the monks and clerics who recorded things, these annulments and legitimizations created a virtual world in which annulled real world marriages did not exist, and appropriate legitimizing marriages did exist, with all appropriate side effect implications, including Clemence having been queen.. - Paul K.
